The Perfect Match
The Perfect Match
The Tropicool Company. Behind this title, which summons images of blue lagoons lined with palm trees and teeming with vivid fauna, lies an artistic enterprise and informal collective of "tropicool" artists, who have been collaborating with The Tropicool Company since 2014. Among them, Florian Viel, a promising Parisian designer who fell under the spell of the tropics while visiting the Chichén Itzá archaeological site in Mexico. His extensive work is at the crossroads between visual and sensory, examining how people perceive the tropics. They deconstruct the clichés and stereotypes that make them an object of fascination, but also of boundless inspiration. Juggling between organic and geometric shapes and challenging chromatographic conventions, his radically pop creations awaken the senses and the mind.
By partnering with The Tropicool Company, Cointreau is perpetuating a long artistic tradition, marked by bold, avant-garde, and sometimes iconoclastic creative approaches. Previous limited-edition collaborations included talent like Vincent Darré, Laetitia Casta, and Dita von Teese. The Tropicool Company's spirited universe naturally echoes the Margarita, Cointreau's signature cocktail. The Angevin House and Parisian collective were a perfect match waiting to happen, making collaborating on the 2021 limited edition an obvious choice.
"Our creative approach consisted of mixing the Margarita’s universe with the style of The Tropicool Company, just like in a cocktail shaker." Florian Viel
A TROPICAL-INSPIRED TRYPTYCH
A TROPICAL-INSPIRED TRYPTYCH
The Tropicool Company and Florian Viel's artistic approach plays with the senses. Their works call upon taste and smell as means of immersion and inquiry. And the unparalleled organoleptic depth of the orange liqueur was bound to spark the designer's thirst for creativity.
"I mix a lot of things in my work, color palettes and shapes to create new ones and build a whole new thing with them. I think crafting a cocktail involves the same process: a thoughtful mix of flavors to achieve a unique taste." Florian Viel
Three of the four faces of the bottle originally designed by Édouard Cointreau are adorned with scenes of exotic extravagance. Intended as a perfect miniature world, these landscapes pay homage to the luxuriant universe of the Margarita, populated by peaceful toucans and charismatic monstera deliciosa.
Each face of the bottle features subtle references to both the orange liqueur and the cocktail to which this limited edition pays homage. First, the orange, the sunshine fruit that Cointreau sources from around the world. Then Acapulco, the name alone is a call to travel. But it’s also the birthplace of the cocktail that would become an international sensation: the Margarita. This limited edition is also a colorful celebration of the harmony of the ingredients that comprise the classic cocktail: blue for the tequila, white for the salt, yellow for the lemon, and of course, orange for the Cointreau liqueur. A genuine fantasy cocktail!
"I drew up designs that incorporated elements from both my work and the world of the House of Cointreau." Florian Viel
3 UNIQUE CREATIVES
The Toucan Spirit
The Toucan Spirit
The toucan is a constant source of inspiration for The Tropicool Company. The glorious bird regularly unfurls its smooth silhouette in their compositions. But the toucan is also a symbol of Florian Viel's philosophy. Its monumental beak goes beyond mere looks; it actually helps regulate the bird's body temperature, thus becoming a subtle symbol of the "Tropicool signature": extravagance and mastery combined.
Original Margarita, A Taste of Timelessness
Original Margarita, A Taste of Timelessness
The story of the original Margarita started in 1948 in Acapulco, a jet-set destination on the Mexican coast visited by the who’s who of the time. Margaret “Margarita” Sames, a wealthy American socialite known for hosting notoriously lavish parties with extravagant twists, needed a creation for one of her soirées. For this particular one, she wanted a good daytime cocktail that her swanky guests could enjoy by the pool. Naturally, she turned to two of her favorite spirits: Cointreau and tequila. After a couple of tries, she decided to add lime juice for balance and a subtle salt rim to further enhance the character of what would become the Cointreau Original Margarita.
An immediate success, “The Drink” came to be known as the “Margarita,” a name coined by Sames’s husband, and the recipe spread by word of mouth by Sames’s influential friends. Owing to its ease of preparation and refreshing, versatile nature, the Cointreau Original Margarita has emerged as a true classic on the international cocktail scene and inspired countless variations around the world.
Cointreau has played a key role in this success story. In fact, Cointreau and the Margarita are so inseparable that Sames famously proclaimed, “A Margarita without Cointreau is not worth its salt.”

Maison Cointreau has asked artist Florian Viel to create the packaging for its 2021 Limited Edition. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Paris after a thesis on the emergence of plants in art, Florian Viel questions the Western view of the Tropics. Between clichés and fantasies of an enchanted elsewhere, he thwarts the stereotypes about the tropical world by creating a hyper-colored pop universe that mixes abstract and figurative drawing
